X left and Y top is objectively correct. I am indifferent on A and B placement... this whole thing should not exist though, they should be somewhat standardized. I think the whole thing is a pretty sound argument against some kinds of patent and copyright.
Xbox adapted it from the Dreamcast. And Sega went with the left to right ordering with their first controller (A B C). The Atari 7800, I read left to right, and my understanding is that Japanese is read traditional right to left, so it seems obvious why westerns would think AB is intuitive and Japan went with BA.
