I always think it's Bottom & Top. No wonder I keep failing

I mean if you filp it to look at the buttons, it works..

Yes! Same here, and I think Bottom and Top make so much sense that I've experimented with flipping the controls for some games and using LB as left bottom and LT as Left Top. It feels nice, but it's not always possible to rebind controls because I'm lazy.

LB is on top though?

It is. you didn't read my second sentences: "No wonder I keep failing"

I always thought B stood for button, as it's a digital input like the A, B, X, Y buttons.

Those buttons were originally pressure sensitive on the Xbox, and the PS1/PS2 equivalents.

This pressure sensitive buttons were the shit, miss them. Guess they became somewhat redundant, once proper progressive triggers were a thing.

What would you use it for?

I have 0 evidence of where I got it from and also thought this.

LB and RB are called “shoulder buttons” I think?

10

u/Ngklaaa 2h ago

You're right! I find them really awkward to press with my shoulders, so I usually just use my index fingers

I can know what it means and still mentally fuck up while reading it on screen.

That doesnt help me at all though.

u/DARTH-PIG 1h ago

Well between the two, which looks more like a trigger?

1

u/thatonesleft 1h ago

Well… yeah, exactly. Which one is it?

Have you ever shot a gun? Or seen one? Was the trigger horizontal or vertical? Now look at the Xbox controller and which one is vertical?

And now bumper. Have you seen cars? Have you ever seen vertical bumpers? Cuz I haven't. Now look at the Xbox controller and which on is horizontal?

The... trigger shaped one? I don't know if I'm misunderstanding you, but they're shaped like triggers as in gun triggers. It's why right trigger was the standard "shoot" button since at least Halo on Xbox while Playstation didn't see that control scheme standardized to R2 until the PS4 (though some games tried defaulting to R2 during the PS3 days, but it didn't get picked up as quickly with how bad those buttons were on that controller)

Can't help you bro

I grown up with Nintendo control scheme, but really like the idea of calling those shoulder buttons triggers. Just disappointed that xbox controller doesn't have levers on the sides called "selector" for toggling stuff. Such a missed opportunity.

Oh! I always thought B was for button

Yeah, but intuitively: LB - left back, LT - left what the fuck?

And then there is L3 on the stick…

9

u/RubinoPaul 3h ago

L3 = LS (literally left stick lol)

6

u/compadre_goyo 2h ago

LS = Moving the left stick

L3 = Clicking the left stick

2

u/RubinoPaul 2h ago

In games it says “Press LS”. L3 is PlayStation’s name of the button

2

u/compadre_goyo 2h ago

I genuinely prefer the L3 | LS distinction in function. But I can see how it is unintuitive for people who people who are still learning the control scheme.

1

u/RubinoPaul 1h ago

Yeah, I agree. I remember when I was a kid with X360 “Press LS” fucked me up lol

I hadn’t internet at the time and genially couldn’t understand what’s that supposed to mean

1

u/FoxMeadow7 1h ago

Except when it isn’t even that and it simply says L…

1

u/RubinoPaul 33m ago

Tell me that when I was a kid. :)

This! I also intuitively translate the B as "back". Obviously when I think about it again, I know which is which, but when you're playing you're not thinkng too deeply. R1/R2 is instantly understandable for any player of whatever console.

Valve clearly understood that as well, which is why they changed that part from the Xbox controller.
