Artists: Beware of requests for unpaid trials

Hey there. There's been quite a few posts promising paid work, but requesting a free trial first ("so we can see if our styles and working chemistry are a good fit"). They ask for a page or two, a cover, or character design. This is almost always scam. The scammer gets free art from a couple artists, but there's no paid follow-up.

Serious projects have paid trials.

If you ever feel like doing a free trial, I recommend collaborating on a short unpaid project instead. That way you won't get scammed and you might find a great collaborator.

Discussion: Ban of file-hosting services (Google Drive, Dropbox etc.) as portfolios

Hey there.

With the ever-growing number of scammers, we got to the point of considering the ban of scammers' beloved tool: a private Google Drive folder full of stolen art. There are many free public portfolio hosting alternatives: ArtStation, Behance, Cara, etc., so it's not that much of a loss for other artists.

Or is it?

This is where you can give us your opinion on the matter.

Thanks!

Looking for Artist - Paid (Hiring) Comic Illustrator for Superhero Proof of Concept

Hey, everyone!

I'm looking for an artist interested in collaborating on a short proof of concept for an original superhero comic.

The project consists of 4 pages (26 panels total).

Budget: Around $150 (negotiable).

The current goal is:

Page 1 (7 panels): Fully rendered (color)

Pages 2–4: Clean black-and-white line art (no color)

These pages will be used to gather feedback from comic readers before deciding whether to continue with the full project. If we're a good fit and the project moves forward, I'd love to continue working together on future paid pages.

As for style, I'm generally drawn to modern Western superhero comics with realistic anatomy, cinematic storytelling, expressive characters, and detailed environments. That said, I'm not married to any one style. Those are simply my personal preferences, and I'm absolutely open to artists showing me their own style if they think it would fit the project well.

If you're interested, please comment or send me a DM with your portfolio, your typical page rates, and any questions you may have.

Thanks! I look forward to potentially collabing with one of you.

Hi everyone!
I wanted to share a short Gorilla-Man story that I illustrated for Marvel Comics. I’ve been working professionally in the comics industry for over 40 years, collaborating with publishers such as Marvel, DC Comics, IDW, Image, Soleil, Dupuis, Delcourt, and Sergio Bonelli Editore.
I still enjoy creating dynamic storytelling, expressive characters, and detailed artwork, and I hope you’ll enjoy this story as much as I enjoyed drawing it.
I’m currently available for new freelance opportunities, including comic books, graphic novels, covers, pin-ups, concept art, and illustration work.
I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback!

Question CREATING COMIC BOOKS REQUIRE SOME SORT OF MIRACLE - WHY DO YOU WANT TO CREATE A COMIC BOOK?

Thumbnail
gallery
20 Upvotes

I'm genuinely curious. Why do you want to create a comic book? It seems like everything is against the creator. I'm talking to the writer/creators. If you know how to draw, this world is perfect for you. This was my first foray into this world. My comic book turned into a graphic novel and this journey has been ridiculously hard at every turn. I bit off more than I can chew. I merely had an idea and it ballooned. The amount of money one has to spend to create one is exorbitant. The market for traditional comic books is really small. It is so hard to get published. Mangas are the wave. Outside of me just wanting to complete, I do not why I continue. Everything is against the comic book creator. You're just meet with resistance. You have to constantly hustle to get eyes on your book. Almost have to be a masochist to keep creating. Shoutout to all the people creating these things.

Feedback I've Made My First One Shot Comic!

Thumbnail

Hello! This is my first post here. I've just finished and published my first 12 page one shot comic. I've attached some panels/pages that I'm the most proud of. Regarding the story, I have plans to bigger/grander stories set with this character/world (as I'm sure a lot of budding comic creators do lol) but this one was designed to be short and simple. The main gist is about a man who gains mysterious powers and uses them to fight against a tyrannical government that has taken over his city.

I'm posting to show off what I've done. I was a little nervous about showing the greater internet at large (especially reddit lol) my work as I'm mainly doing this for fun and for the love of the game lol.

I would also like to potentially meet and interact with other creators and maybe bounce ideas back and forth as I lack a lot of creative friends to chat about my projects with, at least in a semi-productive way if that makes any sense. Hope to hear from some of you :D (also, I wasn't sure what flair to use, so I just used feedback, hope that's okay)

Full comic can be viewed here for those interested:

Feedback help with dialogue/monologues

hey yall, i'm rewriting/drafting a story i wrote last year about sleep paralysis and dream hopping! you may have seen my post a few days ago about being in creative paralysis but i'm finally just doing it. this is my first time making a comic (aside from when i tried to write the first chapter last year and scrapped it after not being too fond of the art style i chose/all the plot holes from not writing a whole arc's structure before starting the first chapter)

i'm struggling a bit with dialogue and monologues and how they should be shown, for now in the drafts i'm just hand writing roughly what's gonna be said, but i'm not sure how to differentiate the voices if that makes sense? and if i can find a way, i can cut down on the monologue text describing their voices. how do i show that the ghost kid (written in the thin crackly brush) is like staticky, and the doorway monster thing (written with the normal brush i was using for text but with my non dominant hand lol) is like screechy and sharp? this is 3 pages, by the way: 2 full-page panels and 1 3-panel.

there are also other parts where the dialogue/monologue feels excessive and too on the nose, but i don't know how else to give exposition without dragging things on for too long. the first chapter is already at 20 pages for just the draft, but i don't wanna leave too many questions unanswered in the beginning.

i have it all drafted in a google doc if anyone's down to read the draft it and give some much needed critique, here it is!

Resource Comic Colourist Practice

Hey! I have recently been re-reading and getting back into comics. And while I am a graphic designer, my illustration skills aren't the best... Then I realised, it would be so fun to be a comic colourist! I've had a little search online but I could only find kids colouring pages. Does anyone have any advice or links to any pieces I could practice colouring on or any advice on how to dive into that world!

I wasn't 100% on the tag so hopefully 'colorist for hire' works!

Question Are there any horror-themed comic contests, anthologies, etc. out there?

I'm most interested in making comics in or adjacent to the horror and psychological genres. Having a goal to work toward is really helpful for me, so I was wondering if there are any horror-themed contests and such that any of you know about. It's fine if they aren't currently open for submissions as long as they will be sometime this year or next year.

Feedback Feedback about a script for an One-Shot of Urban Fantasy

Hi Everyone!

I'm writing here because I previously shared my script. I received several criticisms like it was unclear and confusing for an artists to draw. I've now made several corrections based on your comments, which were very helpful, but I'd like to know if it's better than before. Specifically, I'd appreciate feedback related to the new format, plot, characters, and specially the pacing. I honestly feel it's a bit long, and I still have some things to finish, like the ending of the battle. The current synopsis is:

Ingrid Ivarson it's an aspiring demon hunter, but in her graduation test from her Academy, she is forced to fight a demon related to her past: An Arachne. Now, her fight becomes personal, a fight that leads to overcome her greatest fears and insecurities.

HERE is the Link. Anyway, thanks for your time and I will read your comments.

Looking for Writer/Editor - Unpaid Give me a oneshot to illustrate

Hi guys. Anyone has some cool idea for a short oneshot that they don't mind i use as practice? You will of course get credit for the story. My own stories are super long and ambitious, so i wanna start with something smaller.

What i like is historical/fantasy. Seinen/adults, horror/thriller/dark. Psychological or philosophical. It can have cool action, but action must not be the sole focus. Feel free to dm me with a short summary.

Looking for Artist - Paid Writer looking for artist

Hi, I'm a cartoon writer based in Ireland. I've written dozens of finished cartoon scripts, both one panel and multi panel. I'm looking for an artist to collaborate with.

I write humorous and political cartoons from a left wing perspective.

My goal is to submit completed cartoons to newspapers, magazines, and online publications. If you're interested, I'd be happy to show my work. I am confident that much of my stuff will sell. I am happy to split everything 50-50 with the artist. Alternatively, I can pay per completed cartoon.
