Culture/Lifestyle Yo Greeks, did you know that one of the most elegant streets in Bucharest is named "Str. Stavropoleos", named after the Stavropoleos church that sits in the middle of it, built by a Greek monk in 1724 called Ioannikie Stratonikeas?

‘The Odyssey’ leads the box office charge for a record 2026

Christopher Nolan’s hotly anticipated adaptation of The Odyssey is set to push the summer box office to pre-pandemic levels, boosting hopes among cinema executives of a record year in 2026. The film is on track to take mor

e than $200mn in box office opening sales this weekend, according to estimates shared with the FT, putting it ahead of the Oscar-winning director’s hit Oppenheimer three years ago.  Sales of between $80mn and $100mn are expected in the US when it opens in 3,900 North American theatres, with a further $110mn likely to be taken in the more than 70 other markets around the world.

Data compiled by Rentrak shows that the summer box office is on course to be the best since before the pandemic in 2019, with an estimated $2.5bn in sales already since the first Friday in May. This is about 7 per cent higher than last year and only just short of the $2.7bn generated in the same period in 2019.

“Through May and June [it has been] extraordinarily strong with each month generating over a billion dollars in domestic [US] revenue,” said Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak’s head of marketplace trends.

Edit: considering the number of down votes i am getting, today seems to be a bad day for Balkaners volonteering in american culture wars.

Miscellaneous Threw dog poop into my neighbors car sunroof. Am I in the wrong here?

For some context, we have had numerous issues in the past because of him parking his Escalade on my part of the grass. I've told him many times to please stop as it leaves tire marks and kills the grass. Yesterday I came home from work only to find that he had yet again parked on my side of the grass.

I had just let my dog out to do her business, and in a fit of rage I took my garden shovel, scooped the poop and flung it into his conveniently open sunroof. Some of it definitely got onto the white leather interior, and looking back at my actions I feel like I went too far.

This morning he came pounding on my door to confront me about this, but if course I denied all of the accusations. My brother thinks this was justified, but other family members think I'm a complete asshole. AITA?

Outdoors/Travel HELP WITH MY TRIP

I'll be in Athens for a week and then I'm planning to go to Albania, specifically Sarandé. I've ruled out flying to Corfu and then taking the ferry, so I need information on how to get around by bus, because what I've found is very confusing. I'm also thinking of taking a few days out of Athens to go to Meteora, and then continue on to Sarandé. Any information would be helpful, thanks.

Politics & Governance 2016 Coup Attempt in Turkey

When the coup attempt took place in Turkey on July 15, 2016, I was in Alexandroupoli, Greece.

I will never forget that night.

The city was in complete turmoil. Military personnel were urgently called back to their bases, and no one knew what was happening just across the border or what might happen next.

To this day, I have never had the chance to ask someone who actually lived through those events in Turkey what it was really like.

I still remember the images of airstrikes on police and security facilities, the reported attempt to assassinate President Erdogan, and the scenes of people celebrating because a coup had begun.

What was it like for you to live through those events?

Cuisine Terasa Obor, Bucharest, that only sells mici, the romanian version of cevapi. We eat them with mustard. How many would you eat?

This is maybe the most famous “restaurant” in Bucharest. People make huge queues to eat mici, especially during weekends. The mici are perfect, but the terrace also has “drinking music” and many many messages (banters) written all over, messages like “Veni, vidi, mici” or “you are more drunk than your father” or “afterSkol for grandparents” and so on. Plus big photos of romanian sportsmen or actors 😁 It is a whole vibe and i love this. If i ever were to move out of my home town, this is a place i would miss.

PS: the terrace is in the same area where the Obor Market is, so you can go and shop some fresh tomatoes, onion, cheese etc and then go have some mici with a beer.

Politics & Governance Are Chetniks in Serbia are the same as UPA in Ukraine?

I am curious how Serbs feel about the role of Chetniks (Yugoslav Army in the Homeland) during WW2? Because, what I have read these guys are literally the same as UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army) in Ukraine.
1) Both fought for independence of their countries. For Chetniks it was Kingdom of Yugoslavia, for UPA it was Ukrainian People’s Republic, which lost its independence in 1921 during Russian Civil War.
2) Both occasionally collaborated with Nazis, but fought against Nazis most of the time.
3) Both were heavily anti-communist. Chetniks were against Yugoslav partisans of Tito, UPA were against USSR.
4) Both movements were involved in ethnic cleansing and genocidal practices. The most recent hype topic is against Poles in Wolyn for UPA. While Chetniks committed the same actions against Croats and Bosniaks.
5) Both movements are recognized as heros and being glorified by modern governments in each country.

Serbia also in process of entering EU, the same as Ukraine. Is Chetniks topic is used by Croatia against Serbia integration? The same as Poland does towards Ukraine targeting UPA theme.
