lookingfor Lobster (hummer) in Zurich

Upvotes

My son decided today that his reward and wish for his successful first blood draw ever (long story, he is a special needs kid and it was a 3 hour ordeal) is that he wants to eat lobster. I honestly have no clue where this is coming from. But I promised it.

I tried to google for it, but the only place i found was the Hummerbar which seems like one of those dark-mahogany-interieur fancy michelin star / hotel restaurant type establishments that I think he wouldn’t enjoy, he is thinking of something outdoors, terrasse type of thing watching ships go by (or at least cars), does anyone have a recommendation? Like a lakeside seafood restaurant, or something on top of a hill?
We can drive somewhere else but Zurich would still be preferred.

thanks so much.

itookapicture Accidental Brutalism in Zürich

Walked past this demolition site today and couldn’t resist taking a photo.
I know it’s not actually Brutalism 😅 but for a second it really felt like an installation.
As someone who likes architecture and graphic design, I always end up noticing scenes like this more than the finished buildings.

rant Why is phone use while driving tolerated?

For a supposedly rule-abiding nation, I find it so confusing that there seems to be absolutely no enforcement of the rules on using phones while driving.

I genuinely think 20% of drivers in Zurich are on their phone at any one time. It isn’t just cars - it’s lorry and coach drivers too. I think the problem is worse than literally any European city I’ve been to. Certainly it’s 10x worse than in the UK. It’s crazy.

As someone who mainly cycles it scares the shit out of me that all these morons are driving around staring at their phones. Why is nothing done?

lookingfor Participants wanted for scientific research

Hello, I'm Matteo Secco, a young researcher from Milan currently collaborating with ETH for a research study in computer vision and camera calibration.

We're trying to make computer-aided physiotherapy more affordable for anyone and to be carried out in the cozyness of people's houses.
We're looking for people willing to try a first step to let computers help users with that and give us their feedback so we can further improve this crucial step!

The study takes place in Gloriastrasse 37/39, Zürich (Voltastrasse stop of tram lines 6 and 8 and bus N6) and takes approximately 30 minutes.

If you'd like to help us, you can book yourself an appointment on the following link: https://calendly.com/eth-sms-msecco/scientific-collaboration-eth

Additional information on the study are provided in the link!

lookingfor What to do with kids on a rainy weekend?

I don’t have kids myself, but I am hosting a friend and her two kids this weekend. We wanted to do outdoorsy things but it looks like the weather will be crap.
We have the Lindt Factory as an option - are there other ideas of what to do? The kids are 8 and 4 respectively.
Thank you for your time.

rant Rant: Plane noise pollution in Wallisellen. I hate them so much.

Hey guys,

I live in Wallisellen near the Glattzentrum and the Bahnhof. I don't know what happened but I became extremely sensitive and frustrated by the noise of the planes that fly by. Especially when it's lower altitude. I can't sit outside on my balcony for 15 minutes without having at least 1 plane flying above us. I can't get used to it at all.

Yesterday evening there were flying planes until almost midnight. It's starts getting unlivable for me.

Closing the window is not a solution.

Am I suffering alone or are there any others?

Thank you for letting me write this out.

ihaveaquestion What medical/biomed companies specialize in stroke treatment?

Hey everyone,

I am currently working in the Netherlands at a university. Did my Master's here and am currently working as a software engineer.

I would like to further pursue research into stroke treatment by creating tools for interventional radiologists to use. Is there any company that specializes in or has a specific branch?

Does not have to be in Zurich, but it is a good first place to start looking.

rant People here have no chill

I went to the post office just to explore the place. We were just looking around when a woman walked in. She was taking off her sunglasses or something. We’d been there for maybe 1 minute like that and I was already on my way out. She immediately started talking to me, probably Swiss German. I didn’t understand a word, but I definitely got negative vibes. I guessed she wanted to know whether she had to wait for me, so I just gestured and said “Go … please.” She was huffing and puffing like crazy. And I swear… she didn’t have to wait for me at all.

Another time I was in a public building in my Gemeinde. There are several rooms there that I’d been curious to explore, but they’re usually locked. One of them happened to be open and there were no warning signs, nothing at all. Inside I found these beautiful giant looms, so I stepped back out to grab my phone because I wanted to take a picture of the looms with the fabric on them.
Just then a woman came over looking absolutely furious. I got the impression she didn’t want me going in, but… well, by then I had already been inside right? If visitors weren’t allowed, shouldn’t the door have been locked or at least have a sign saying so? I tried asking politely: “They’re beautiful. Could I just step back in for a quick photo?” I would have thought people enjoy hearing that someone appreciates their work. Instead, she literally shut the door in my face.

One day I went in the library completely spontaneously, just because I wanted somewhere warm to escape the cold. I’m not someone who plans everything in advance. The door was open, so to me that simply meant the library was open.
The librarian started asking if i wanted to borrow a book and i was like “ yeah maybe” and she almost panicked because there were only a few minutes left before closing time. She kept telling me, at least 20 times, that she absolutely couldn’t stay late. I was perfectly ok with that. I just wandered around a bit. Then she started asking me where I was from and whether I’d recently moved here. She told me she was studying my language and that she actually had a lesson that very day. So I said that if she wanted, I’d be happy to help her practise through conversation. She looked at me in complete disbelief and said “Who? You?” …and nothing else. I mean… yes?
Of course I left when the library closed. I never expected her to stay beyond her working hours. But instead of simply waiting a couple of minutes, she spent the whole time making passive-aggressive remarks. At one point she even commented that my 1yo’s shoes were a bit muddy, even though you could barely notice.

Almost every interaction I have here ends up feeling unpleasant. It’s endless

ihaveaquestion Tennis for beginners

Hi everyone!
I’d like to start playing tennis in Zurich as a complete beginner and I’m looking for recommendations.
I’m mainly interested in:
Beginner-friendly clubs or group lessons
Reasonably priced options (I don’t want to spend a fortune)
A friendly atmosphere where it’s easy to meet people and improve
I’m based in Zurich, but I’m happy to travel a bit if it’s worth it.
If you’ve had a good experience with a club, coach, or course, I’d really appreciate your suggestions. Thanks!
